Forest Danger Meter

You might be wondering why you were not provided instruction on the use of the Forest Danger Meter in the previous section.

The Forest Danger Meter is used to determine the Fire Danger Index. To determine the Fire Danger Index measurements such as relative humidity, temperature and wind speed are required. This data is obtained by the instruments we have just covered.

This data is recorded on a notepad or a Wildfire Information Worksheet, from which it can be referenced and entered into the Forest Danger Meter. It therefore seems logical to firstly introduce you to the process of obtaining this data and the means of recording it, before we look at the operation of the Forest Danger Meter.

You will now be provided with instruction on the use of the Forest Danger Meter via a narrated Flash animation. Feel free to pause, rewind, stop and play this content as the subject matter can be quite tricky to grasp the first time round.

At the end of the animation there is an opportunity to practise your skill in using this instrument via an interactive version of the meter. Example data is provided for you to practise with. You may replay the animation and practise with the interactive meter as much as you desire.
